A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
