Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
