The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
